About

Gert Thierens (b. 1984, Belgium) graduated from Sint Lucas School of Arts, Antwerp in 2008. Although his oeuvre spans a variety of media, including drawing, film and sculpture, as an artist he has largely concerned himself with the methodology of painting.

The nature of his materials and his method of applying them is crucial to the understanding of his practice. His use of traditional techniques and materials tie his work to the history of painting and create a dialogue with visual cultures of the past.

For Thierens the artistic process is a search with no certain outcome. The surface of a painting is essentially a simplified form of the material world, with its own rules, history and infinite potential. A world not subject to the flowing nature of time, but in which every painting exists within the vicinity of a previous one. The resulting works are reflections, mute insights, in which a sense of playfulness and sometimes dark humour can be detected.

His works can be found in collections throughout Europe.
